Ortho-K is also a better option for adult patients who have dry eye and are unable to wear soft contact lenses comfortably during the daytime.

Ortho-K is also an effective and FDA-approved option for children from the age of 6 to slow down the progression of nearsightedness, thereby lowering the risk of future ocular pathologies such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal tear/hole/detachment, and cataracts

How Ortho-K Works

Orthokeratology(CRT), commonly known as Ortho-K, is a non-surgical procedure designed to temporarily correct mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness) and sometimes other vision problems such as astigmatism.

The process works by reshaping the curvature of the cornea using specially designed rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses.

  • Customized Lenses: Ortho-K involves using specially designed RGP lenses tailored to the patient's eyes. These lenses are thicker in the middle and thinner towards the edges, a design that gently reshapes the cornea.
  • Overnight Wear: The patient wears these lenses overnight. While the person sleeps, the lenses apply gentle pressure on the cornea, temporarily reshaping it. This corneal reshaping modifies how light enters the eye, aiming to correct visual impairments.
  • Temporary Correction: The effect of Ortho-K is temporary; however, with regular overnight use of the lenses, the cornea's shape is maintained in a way that corrects the person's vision during the day. This means the patient can go lens-free with improved vision during waking hours.
  • Reversible and Adjustable: Because the changes to the cornea are temporary, the effects of Ortho-K can be reversed by discontinuing the use of the lenses. Additionally, the treatment can be adjusted over time to accommodate changes in the patient's vision.

Your Ortho-K Options

There are three FDA-approved brands for orthokeratology: Euclid Emerald, Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT), and Vision Shaping Treatment (VST) by Bausch and Lomb. Each of these can help you enjoy clear, lens-free days.
