Are you struggling with persistent dry eyes? At Image Eyecare Optometry, we offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, a breakthrough treatment that targets the root causes of dry eye disease. Here’s how IPL therapy can provide lasting relief and why it might be the solution you have been looking for.
What is IPL Therapy?
IPL therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses pulses of light to reduce inflammation and improve the function of the meibomian glands, which are often at the heart of dry eye problems. By gently warming these glands, IPL helps to clear blockages and restore the natural flow of oils that keep your eyes lubricated.
What is IPL Therapy for?
IPL is particularly effective for treating:
- Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): MGD is a leading cause of dry eye, where the glands in your eyelids become blocked or inflamed. IPL helps to clear these blockages and reduce inflammation, offering relief from dry eye symptoms.
- Rosacea and Ocular Rosacea: For patients with rosacea, IPL can reduce the redness and inflammation that affect the skin and eyes.
- Hordeola or Chalazion (Stye): We use both IPL and LLLT Red Mask to promote quicker healing of stye on the eyelids.
- Dermodex Blepharitis: is an inflammatory eye condition associated with an overpopulation of microscopic mites called Demodex. These mites live around hair and eyelash follicles and can cause inflammation of the eyelids and severe dry eyes. We use IPL and LLLT Blue Masks with topical prescription eyedrop to reduce the mite population and the inflammation of the eyelids.
- Chronic Dry Eye: If you have tried other treatments without success, IPL may offer the relief you need by addressing the underlying inflammation that contributes to chronic dry eye.
What to Expect During an IPL Treatment at Image Eyecare Optometry
Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. Here’s what you can expect during an IPL session:
- Preparation:
- Please arrive with a clean face, no creams or make-up on the treatment area if possible.
- Micellar wipe will be used to clean your face prior to treatment.
- Allow 45-60 minutes for the session.
- Pre-treatment photos will be taken for documentation.
- Eye shield will be placed over your eyes so your eyes will be protected but you will see a bright flash of light with each pulse
- Test spots will be performed first to establish energy level and may increase with each subsequent session. Each session will have 5 passes on each side of your face
- Treatment:
- The IPL device delivers precise pulses of light to the eyelids. The majority of patients tolerate the treatment well. It can feel like a slight snapping of a rubber band on the skin.
- After IPL and LM LLLT treatment, our doctor will also perform Eyelid Debridement (scraping both the keratinized and thickened lid margin) and Meibomian Gland Expression using specialized handheld devices. This last step helps to exfoliate the eyelids and open up the meibomian glands, which increases the formation of healthy tears and lessen dry eyes symptoms.
- Aftercare: Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment. We will provide you with any necessary aftercare instructions to ensure the best results.
